Investigation into Potential Fuel Saving using Auxiliary Sail MFV ''Danbrit''
This report covers the analysis of the technical requirements of auxiliary sail in terms of the main parameters: wind climate experienced by the vessel, ability of the vessel to carry sail as limited by her stability characteristics, and the derivation of overall fuel savings under these conditions. Also included is a comparison of the fuel which could be saved with the present annual fuel consumption in monetary terms to assist investment appraisal. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
A Study to Forecast the Commercial Costs of Farming Turbot and Dover Sole
The 1975 equivalent report (Technical Report 130) was based on research results obtained from the White Fish Authority’s (WFA) and the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food fish cultivation programmes. At that time, because, of course, industry’s involvement was not at the commercial stage, several of the important costing parameters had to be taken from fresh water trout farming. Predictions, however, were that such schemes were viable. Since 1975 the WFA’s Research and Development Programme has largely been directed to confirming the predictions and to establishing commercially appropriate costs. During the period, commercial participation has become more active, particularly with turbot. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
A Survey of Current Research on the Selectivity of Fishing Gear
The selectivity of fishing gears has become an important issue in recent years as a consequence of greater awareness of the necessity to conserve fish stocks, and to take only those species and sizes of commercial value. This report summarises current research work in this field and the ‘state of the art’ of different selectivity investigations. Research is being carried out by several international research organisations and among the leading authorities are the DAFS Aberdeen Laboratory and MAFF’s Lowestoft Laboratory. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Investigation into Methods of Providing Accurate Box Weights when Boxing at Sea
As part of the 1982-83 MAFF commissioned research and development programme the SFIA is studying fish handling methods at sea and on shore. Boxing at sea has advantages of fish quality and yield, and efficient handling, but currently boxes are being detrimentally overfilled with varying weights of fish. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish -

Over Wintering of Crassostrea gigas Seed at 8 Locations in the UK
Pacific oyster seed of three size ranges were held in the sea over the winter of 1973/74 at eight locations around the UK. Survival and growth rates at each site were monitored at near monthly intervals. Survival of the smallest size (1.5 to 2.5mm) exceeded 75% at only two locations, both warmer than the other six, and fell below 30% at three locations. Surprisingly the two warmer locations produced poorer results with the medium sized seed (5 to 6mm), with survivals of 25 and 45%, compared to 30 to 50% at the cooler sites. Survivals with the large seed (10 to 12mm) at one warm and one cooler site were 86 and 80% respectively. Significant growth was recorded at only the two warmer locations, being about a 50 fold increase in weight in the heated water at Hinkley Generating Station and 5 to 7 fold at Guernsey. At the other sites growth did not exceed 85% and was zero for several. Until the reasons for the variability in survival of the smaller sizes of seed have been determined, commercial growers are advised to exercise great care if they attempt to overwinter in the sea seed of less than 10mm in size. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Fish Portion Sizes - Blue Whiting & Chip Shop Interviews
In the absence of any up to date statistics regarding portion sizes of fish fillets sold in fish and chip shops, the White Fish Authority commissioned a national survey to interview fish friers. 734 fish friers were contacted by telephone during August, 1977, to determine the average portion size of their main selling species. In addition, they were asked questions about skin-on and skin-off fillets, purchases of wet and/or frozen fish, whether they had heard of Blue Whiting and whether they would consider selling it. The specific use of the research was to locate shops selling small portions of frozen, skin-on fish. Following are the results of the research expressed in terms of national finding with various regional distinctions highlighted when significant. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Scallop Overgrowing Depth Trial 1979/1982
The scallops. Pecten maximus (L) and Chlamys opercularis (L) were on grown at four levels in the water column to establish the optimum depth for growth and meat yield. This report gives final data for trials set up using spat collected in 1978. There appeared to be no depth related mortality pattern after the initial stages of cultivation. For optimum growth and meat yield, it is suggested that Pecten should be maintained below 4.5m initially, and then brought nearer the surface as they increase in size. Chlamys can be grown at shallower depths throughout the culture process, but the increase in growth and meat yield was not as great. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish -
Hall Test Research on Blue Whiting
A series of Hall Tests were held in 3 locations (Greater London, Leeds and Walsall) in February/March 1976 using Blue Whiting caught by the MAFF freezer trawler Artic Privateer in 1975. Although it was an exploratory voyage, the fish were caught under commercial conditions and did not represent the pride of an outstanding catch. The fish reflected simply the best quality obtainable from an average catch at that time of the year. For each Hall Test approximately 200 housewives were served samples of hand filleted Blue Whiting crumbed and pan fried and grilled the order of presentation was rotated, and responses to the appearance, flavour and texture of the fish were recorded. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. Blue Whiting Processing Trials Stornaway 1977
The almost universal adoption of 200 mile fishing limits has resulted, to a large extent, in the exclusion of our distant water fishing fleet from their usual fishing grounds, and consequently in a shortage of traditionally acceptable fish such as cod and haddock. This shortage has caused a predictable series of price increases, and shown a need to exploit non-traditional species such as blue whiting, which can be caught in large quantities around our own coast and within the EEC controlled fishing areas. Blue Whiting (Micromesistius poutassau) is a small white fish, a member of the cod family, which congregates in large quantities to the north west of the UK during its springtime spawning season. Throughout the remainder of the year the blue whiting stock disperses throughout the north Atlantic. Estimates of the stock vary between 8 and 12 million tonnes, of which 2 million tonnes could be harvested annually without damaging the stock. Despite increasing fishing activity by foreign vessels, fishing mainly for fishmeal, the stock still remains virtually unexploited. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Market Potential and Opportunities of Mackerel
Following is a report on Stages I and II of the on-going programme to discover the market potential and market opportunities of mackerel. During Stage I, in July 1976, nearly 2,000 housewives were interviewed at random, representing an estimated 18,500,000 housewives in the country. For Stage II, group discussions were conducted in August 1976 with six groups in the North and South, recruited on the basis of their mackerel usage. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Scallop Spat Collection Trials 1981/1982.
The objectives of the 1981 and 1982 spat collection trials were to obtain further information on the type and deployment of collectors in order to maximise their efficiency. Peak settlement in 1981 occurred in early July for Pecten and Chlamys, with a maximum average yield of 605 and 649 spat per collector respectively. In 1982, the peak of settlement occurred in late June, possibly before the bulk of the collectors were placed in the sea and the maximum yield for Pecten and Chlamys per collector was 451 and 185 respectively. Initial trials using different collector materials were carried out to establish the most cost effective type of bag and filler. These trials will continue. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish -

Degritting of King Scallops
Dredged scallops are known to contain ‘grit’ in the form of sand, silt, mud or broken shell. Although washed out in processing, this contamination limits the marketability of these scallops as a ‘live’ product and detracts from their value in comparison with scallops landed by divers. The initial part of this work has confirmed the considerable extent of grit contamination of commercially harvested scallops and that it is effectively removed in the production of a processed product by shucking and washing the meat, but it has also shown that the eating quality of ‘gritty’ scallops deteriorates rapidly if held unprocessed in the shell. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Seafish briefing - Organisations addressing labour issues in the fishing and aquaculture sector. April 2016.
Since approximately 2006, various concerns regarding abuses of workers engaged in the seafood industry have steadily attracted more attention, from the media and civil society advocacy groups. The main concern has been reports of coercive treatment of certain categories of both sea and land-based workers, through abusive labour and recruitment practices variously referred to as slavery or slavery-like practices, forced and bonded labour, human trafficking, as well as serious forms of child labour. This has led to more monitoring, and a wide range of governmental, inter-governmental and NGO initiatives to address the concerns. There have been a number of studies into the scale of the issue but further study is required in order to determine the international scale of human rights and labour abuses in the seafood industry. This briefing note: details some of the key reviews that have looked at the scale of labour issues in the fishing and seafood sectors; and lists the organisations addressing labour rights in the fishing sector. This document was originally produced in March 2015 and was updated in April 2016. -

Further investigations into selectivity and separator trawls
This report describes the most recent in a series of trials investigating the selectivity performance of separator trawls. The twin warp nets were deployed simultaneously on a twin rig trawler in the Moray Firth over a two week period. Four different cod end mesh sizes were used in a number of combinations. The catch from each of the four cod ends were identified and measured. The catch data were analysed to determine the extent of vertical separation for each species and the size selectivity of each codend. Good separation was found and some useful observations made as to the influence of fish size on separation and cod end position on selectivity. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -
Line Ripping Trials with Automated Equipment (Jigging)
Ripping (or Jigging) is the fishing method in which a weighted line with a number of hooks is lowered into a shoal of feeding fish. The hooks are disguised with colouired lures to attract the fish and the line is moved rapidly up and down. This has traditionally been a handline fishery, but new equipment from Scandinavia has now fully automated the process at very reasonable cost. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Working towards better water quality in partnership with aquaculture
Shellfish harvesting areas are classified as ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ depending on the level of E.coli found in the shellfish. Category ‘A’ production areas can go straight to market without any treatment. Shellfish from category ‘B’ harvesting areas need to be Depurated or relayed. Category ‘C’ shellfish have to be heat treated. This paper shows the elevation of E.coli associated with cattle having access to water courses. Remedial action by restricting assess by adequate fencing and control of these animals reduces the microbial burden on shellfish production areas. Squid - A review of their biology and fisheries
LABORATORY LEAFLET NO. 48 - LOWESTOFT Worldwide interest in squid fisheries remained at a low level until shortly after the second world war when the Japanese developed their fishery for Todarodes pacificus into a major industry. In 1960 this produced a peak catch in excess of 690,000 tonnes. Subsequently the Japanese have exploited squid in several other parts of the world and over the last two decades a major fishery has developed in the North-west Atlantic involving distant-water fleets from most of the major fishing nations. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. In cases where this affects the technical content, a paper copy of the original report can still be obtained from Seafish. -

Separator trawls as a tool for improving selectivity for cod
This paper describes the results of comparative fishing trials, under commercial conditions, using a standard trawl and a separator traw. The target species in the fishing area were cod, haddock, whiting, lemon sole and plaice. The separator trawl was fitted with a 120mm lower codend; the upper codend and that on this standard net were 100mm. The trials involved about 90 paired tows over a period of 10 weeks. This report has been produced from a scanned original and may therefore contain some formatting and other inaccuracies. FS3-02.08-Fillet discolouration
Whitefish flesh naturally changes colour with age and depending on how it has been handled after capture. Initially, whitefish species such as cod and haddock have a blue, translucent colouration, which changes to white after a couple of days. After this the flesh can become yellow and then brown but it is generally considered inedible before it changes into these colours. However there are also other reasons as to why fish flesh can be classed as discoloured. This factsheet provides a very basic summary about the reasons for colour changes in whitefish. -
